L’Earl switched the comms on. L’Earl always enjoyed surveillance missions as it was the only chance he had to seriously interact with alien cultures. He was again deep undercover on an ultra net mining mission, a data intensive surveillance pod, hooked to space data waves. L’Earl had the prescient modification on his data obtainer module to be always switched on to data stream variations that could predict interesting counter intelligence patterns.
This time around something felt different. L’Earl could tell there was some undercover data stream pattern desperately trying to slip by his tenacious monitoring. He modified the meta drone to listen more carefully. Torrents of data were slowly picked for investigation, but that pesky little pattern was still undercover. L’Earl felt his interest and curiosity increase.
A video feed interrupted him. It was L’Orp, again. L’Earl switched to automatic and told L’Orp to meet him in half an hour, the usual virtual pod. He hadn’t seen L’Orp in the flesh for over a century, and he wasn’t keen on changing that now. No one met anyone in person these days anyway.
L’Earl uploaded his avatar to meet L’Orp. L’Orp always chose a mantis cloud avatar, so he knew what L’Orp will look like. L’Earl would always pick a different one just to upset L’Orp. L’Orp did not like change, he was not a trained surveillance officer like L’Earl.
17 nanoseconds late, it was very unlike L’Orp to show up this late… (to be continued…)
